ASEAN is one of the most dynamic tourism development regions in the Asia-Pacific region. Most of the ASEAN member countries focus on developing tourism and considering it as an important economic sector in the national economy.

According to the ASEAN secretariat, in 2019, international visitors in ASEAN region reached 143.5 million arrivals, accounting for 9.6% of the total number of international tourists worldwide; growth rate reached 6.1%, higher than the general growth rate of the world (4%). Total receipts from international tourism achieved USD171.1 billion. The source market of the ASEAN region is mainly intra-regional tourists and Northeast Asia, of which the outbound tourist market of Vietnam stands among top 15 leading markets with approximately 4.1 million arrivals travelling to ASEAN.

In 2020 and 2021, due to the harsh wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of tourists travelling to ASEAN slummed. In 2020, ASEAN welcomed only 27.7 million arrivals, declined 80.7% compared to 2019; total receipts from tourists attained about USD43.1 billion, declined 74.8%.

Until now, after a hard time responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry of ASEAN countries has been preparing for reopening and operating activities along with stimulating international tourism. In 2021, ASEAN countries have completed the development of ‘report on The Post Covid-19 Recovery Plan for ASEAN Tourism’ and ‘Guideline on Health and Safety for Workers and Communities in the ASEAN tourism industry’ to fully equip for the safe and effective opening of tourism.

On the same day, the Handover Ceremony of the Protocol to Amend the ASEAN MRA-TP (Mutual Recognition Agreement on Tourism Professionals) was held.
